Buttons tutorial

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

Like I promised. Better late than never. Buttons tutorial from Basics of Sewing.

This book starts off by teaching you how to thread a needle and do some basic stitches. Chapter 2 is on sewing buttons, mending tears, simple alterations and embroidery. Chapters 3 and 4 have instructions on the usual zakka patterns like drawstring bags, quilted coasters and the likes. A few good tips on machine sewing in chapter 4. Overall, this book has clear instructions with illustrations and many nice pictures. One of my favorites!

Craft books in a library near you

This is waaay overdue seeing I took this photo on 29th February (leap year!). I won’t hesitate paying SGD1.55 to reserve a book from the NLB and if I like the book alot, I will buy it. So far I don’t recall owning any English craft books. :p You can find the following books at our local libraries and while they’re excellent books, I still feel that English craft books tend to be too wordy and not as “pretty” as Japanese craft books; I’m biased. pincush

Fully Lined Zipper Pouch Tutorial – Part I

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

I promised a finished craft project and craft tutorial every month and it will be slightly delayed this February. Not forgetting today is February 29th, a leap year!! :D It may not make any difference to our routines but I still feel that today is a special day, especially to those who are born on February 29th! I digress…

I sent my trusty Brother sewing machine to the Brother service center today. :( My bobbin stopped winding and I used my MagLite and saw that some rubber part had melted (after trying to dismantle and remove the cover, and being unsuccessful, and loosening two nuts that I couldn’t put back without removing the cover). Had to lug it all the way to Beach Road on my own on public transport, the 1-hour bus ride really made me sick. It will cost $30 for servicing + extra money for any parts replacement.

So anyhow, I only have part of a zipper pouch tutorial today.

Step 1: Cut your fabrics
I’m making a rounded pouch today and I’m using a 7″ zipper. You will need something that has a BIG circular base to trace the curved shape of the pouch. Prepare 2 pieces for your “outer fabric” and 2 pieces for your “inner”/lining fabric.
